A full guide to End of Tenancy (move out) cleaning

A while ago we wrote about your end of tenancy cleaning and making sure you get your rental deposit back. You can check that article here. After that we got a lot of queries online and on the phone from Surrey and South West London about what does end of tenancy cleaning entails in detail. What is required for your house to be considered professionally end of tenancy cleaned (move out or move in) is what you want to know more about. We always appreciate a good upfront and honest communication with our prospective clients and we have decided to write a bit more on this topic.

First of all, it’s important to understand that every property is different in how long it takes to clean. Two identical size houses can take a different amount of time to clean depending on how many people live in the house, how well it has been maintained over the period, etc. Likewise, not everything can be cleaned to its former shine. Naturally, some things/items/objects are worn down by years of wear and tear (or just by your footprint on the property) and sometimes they are due for restoration or replacement because of the damage inflicted upon it. In short, as a tenant is that you are supposed to make it as clean as it was when you moved in and items/objects as you have found them minus any reasonable wear and tear. For the professional end of tenancy cleaning, you or your service provider will need professional tools and products.

When MyHomeLovely cleaning technicians start with the cleaning they would (depending on the job) divide the property into areas. In other words, chunk it up for better organisation and work efficiency. To make sure nothing is missed a certain way of the cleaning process will be upheld. For instance, dusting first and cleaning Top-to-Bottom-Left-to-Right with carpets or floors done the last (on the way out of the area). Unlike in standard house maintenance cleaning no area can be skipped if it’s clean and everything needs to be touched.

So here is in detail what would need cleaning.

End of tenancy cleaning of General Areas

This would entail dusting, de-cobweb entire area and clean throughout paying special attention to the following:

  • Light fixtures, light switches, plugs and knobs, wall pictures and frames, mirrors, spindles and banisters, radiators and fire surround, skirting and dado rails high and low, curtain rails wiped;
  • Windows cleaned inside, window tracks and window sills, window blinds (if efficient to clean), all glass and mirrors;
  • Doors inside and out to be cleaned including tops, door knobs and handles cleaned sanitised and polished;
  • Shelves and drawers inside and out to be cleaned;
  • If any furniture in the house upholstery is to be vacuumed, cushions lifted and cleaned underneath. Deep cleaning of upholstery can be added at extra cost;
  • If present, all wooden furniture to be wiped clean and polished with the appropriate product;
  • Hard floors if any are to be washed, carpets to be vacuumed or deep cleaned depending on requirements

Cleaning of Kitchen Areas

Washing and sanitising thoroughly all kitchen areas and applying special attention to:

  • Cleaning inside and outside of kitchen cupboards and drawers;
  • Remove grease, scrub and clean wall tiles and grout. Clean tiles and corners of any mould that can be cleaned without specialist remediation;
  • Sanitise and clean sink and water taps, removing limescale and hard water/soap build up;
  • Thoroughly clean fridge and freezer (has to be defrosted prior to our arrival) removing any mildew and food deposits;
  • All kitchen appliances cleaned outside (like a bread maker, toaster, kettle, etc)
  • Clean inside of washing machine including door rubber and soap dispenser, inside dishwasher, inside the oven (single or double), extractor hob including the metal filters, inside microwave;
  • Cleaning and sanitising rubbish bins, taking the rubbish outside to recycling

Cleaning of Bathroom or Toilet

  • Floor and wall tiles cleaned removing limescale and hard water/soap build up, grout scrubbed; remove mould that can be cleaned without specialist remediation;
  • Shower screen (doors) descaled, removing limescale and hard water/soap build up;
  • Bathtub, basin, taps, shower and fittings to be cleaned, de-scaled and polished.
  • Toilet descaled, toilet seat cleaned and sanitised;
  • Mirrors cleaned no streaks left behind;
  • If carpet or laminate/wooden flooring they are to be vacuumed or washed and sanitised.

End of tenancy cleaning of Bedrooms

  • Light fixtures, light switches, plugs and knobs, wall pictures and frames, mirrors,
  • Built in wardrobes (if any) to be cleaned inside and out,
  • Furniture wiped and clean with appropriate products, vacuum under the beds;
  • If present, mattresses to be vacuumed, beds to be made;
  • Skirting boards and dodo rails cleaned;
  • Spot-clean light dirt on walls (not to wash entire walls unless specifically requested);
  • Hard floors if any are to be washed, carpets to be vacuumed or deep cleaned depending on requirements

End of tenancy cleaning of Garage

As a result, this would entail entire area dust-free, cobweb-free and cleaned thoroughly with special attention paid to the following:

  • Light fixtures, light switches, plugs and knobs to be wiped and cleaned
  • Cleaning inside and outside of garage cupboards and drawers
  • Doors inside and out to be cleaned including tops, door knobs and handles cleaned sanitised and polished
  • Concrete floors are to be swept or vacuumed (whichever is more efficient) and washed;

This covers all areas of your home and if cleaned like this you can say it’s professionally and cleaned in its entirety. Certainly, End of tenancy cleaning is not like recurring maintenance cleaning, it’s a lot more labour-intensive and longer work. This list is a very good way of cleaning to make sure you cover everything that might come to inspection. Many companies offer you only package deals and you will be required to pay for the package cleaning (everything included). MyHomeLovely offers you optional extras that you can include or exclude from your end of tenancy cleaning.
