Clean air, clean home?
We spend the majority of our days and years in-doors. In fact about 90% of our time, this is a defeating fact.
But, If you live in a big (and polluted) city such as London, the truth is – this might not be a bad thing after all. The impact of air pollution on our health is getting bigger by the week. Officials say at least 40.000 people in the UK and 9.000 people in London only die prematurely because of health issues caused by air pollution. Asthma, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are just a few of illnesses that are spiking in the last decade.
The big picture, of course, is that we need a long-term solution. You can wear a face mask, but you can’t control the pollution levels of air outside by yourself. You can, however, do enough to make sure you and your family breathe clean and fresh air when you are in your home.
What can we do to make the air we breathe cleaner and healthier? A lot. Here are 5 tips for you to implement this week and breath freely.
Take your shoes off. Just think of all the public areas you have been to today. Any chance you entered a public toilet? Pesticides, pollen, fungi, bacteria or faeces- all of this is spread out all over your home when you walk in your shoes.
Open your windows for at least 15 min a day. This will help circulate the air and get rid of harmful air pollutants
Get a lot of plants inside. House-plants filter out common volatile organic compounds from your indoor plants.
Get an air purifier with HEPA filtration. Many report that this helps greatly with their allergies and air quality, especially if you have pets.
Clean regularly (even more so if you walk in shoes and have pets) with non-toxic and environment-friendly products.
Based on our own experience and health professionals suggestions, we would suggest doing all five tips, but if you can’t then try at least to implement 1, 2 and 5.
At MyHomeLovely we can offer our clients eco-friendly products and most of our clients appreciate that, especially the ones with pets or health issues. In the majority of cases these products clean as well as hard chemicals. They do need a bit more time to “sit” before wiping or rinsing, but they are unlikely to damage your surfaces, smell beautifully natural, are not harmful to humans or animals and they do the job at hand.
Naturally, the problem with air pollution is not only present in the United Kingdom. It’s an issue that comes with over-population, industrialisation, hyper-production and over-consumption and eventually bad waste management. If you are located South-East England the sea breeze can help and if you are in Surrey give us a call and our professional house cleaners wll be happy to help keep your house clean and tidy.
